Sergeant James Byrd is a character from the Spyro the Dragon series. Hailing from Midday Gardens, he was raised by a flock of hummingbirds, who taught him how to fly and trained him in the art of war.

History with the Crash Bandicoot series[]

Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage[]

Sgt. Byrd has a minor role in Purple. He appears in-game as an NPC in Arctic Cliffs, where he introduces himself and warns Crash about the helicopter Rhynoc enemies up ahead. He can also appear by obtaining his Trading Cards in Orange and trading them to Purple via link cable, and is also playable in the multiplayer minigames.

Physical description[]

Sgt. Byrd is a short, squat penguin with dark blue feathers. He has turquoise eyes, a blunt yellow beak, a light patch on his belly, and yellow feet. He wears a grey military helmet on his head, and has two rocket launchers strapped to his back. Some appearances depict him with a jetpack, while others show him flying by flapping his flippers.

Sgt. Byrd is a confident, militaristic penguin. His personality is a spoof of typical secret agent characters such as James Bond. He speaks with a British accent, and prefers to carefully plan his attacks and save his ammo for the perfect moment rather than rushing in.
