The life crate is a crate that, when broken, releases one life.
When the player character dies, any life crates broken before reaching the next checkpoint come back as ? crates. This lasts until the player exits or restarts the level. Life crates in bonus rounds and flashback tapes are an exception to this rule, as they never change into ? crates. Two life crates in the secret route of Un-Bearable in Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back are also exempt.
Typically, Crash Bandicoot's mug is displayed on the sides of the crate. In Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, Crash Twinsanity, and Crash Bandicoot 2: N-Tranced, the other playable characters have their mugs on life crates as well.
Life crates also appear in Skylanders: Imaginators, occasionally summoned through Crash's tertiary attack, Crate Going. They grant him an extra life, a mechanic unique to Crash in that game.
