The Life Crate is a crate which releases one life. "Life Crate" is an unofficial name, and their official name changes depending on the game or the character depicted on the side; for example, crates with Crash's face are officially referred to as Crash Crates[1][2].
When the player character dies, any Life Crates broken before reaching the next checkpoint come back as ? Crates. This lasts until the player exits or restarts the level. Life Crates in bonus rounds and flashback tapes are an exception to this rule, as they never change into ? Crates.
Typically, Crash Bandicoot's face is displayed on the sides of the crate. In Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, Crash Twinsanity, and Crash Bandicoot 2: N-Tranced, the other playable characters have their mugs on life crates as well.
Crash Crates also appear in Skylanders: Imaginators, occasionally summoned through Crash's tertiary attack, Crate Going. They grant him an extra life, a mechanic unique to Crash in that game.
In Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, Crash Crates appear only in Retro Mode. They contain both an extra life and a Golden Wumpa Fruit, which awards the player with 25 Wumpa Fruit. If the player dies after breaking one, it will respawn as a Golden Wumpa Crate, containing only the Golden Wumpa Fruit. All Crash Crates are replaced with Golden Wumpa Crates when playing in Modern Mode. There are also two crates in Rush Hour that spawn as Golden Wumpa Crates by default, even in Retro Mode. Despite the game having multiple playable characters, Crash Crates are used for all of them.
