The Invincibility Mask is a weapon used in Crash Team Racing, Crash Nitro Kart and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. They make the wielder temporarily invincible, unaffected by off-road friction, and travel faster. In addition, Wumpa Fruit won't be lost if the wielder falls into an abyss. When active, the wielder can make opponents spin out by crashing into them. The race track's music will be interrupted by the mask's own theme, depending on which mask the player is using. An invincibility mask's protection ends after a certain amount of time, or if the wielder falls off the track/out-of-bounds. Juiced up masks last a bit longer, and the wielder moves even faster.
In Crash Team Racing, Aku Aku is used for characters that are considered to be good, and Uka Uka is used for characters that are considered to be evil. In Crash Nitro Kart, Aku Aku is used for members of Team Bandicoot, and Uka Uka is used for members of Team Cortex. The Velo Mask is used for members of Team Oxide, Team Trance, and Velo's Champions, except in the handheld versions where it is swapped with Uka Uka.
In Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, Aku Aku and Uka Uka return and protect the same characters as in Crash Team Racing, meaning that Fake Crash uses Uka Uka again like in Crash Team Racing. This time, however, Penta Penguin uses both masks, which is a reference to an error in the NTSC-U version of the original Crash Team Racing. Prior to the July 3, 2019 update, Uka Uka protected the newly added Nitro Kart cast, except for Crunch, who is instead protected by Aku Aku.
With the introduction of the Nitro Tour Grand Prix, not only does Aku Aku protect Tawna and the rest of the Nitro Squad, but the Velo Mask is reintroduced, protecting the remaining Crash Nitro Kart newcomers in place of Uka Uka. As of the Back N. Time Grand Prix, Nitros Oxide is also protected by the Velo Mask.
With the inclusion of the Spyro the Dragon franchise via the Spyro N. Friends Grand Prix, characters from said franchise will be protected by Sparx who is technically not a mask. Additionally, Sparx acts as the invincibility "mask" for all racers when racing on Spyro Circuit.
A new invincibility mask by the name of Apo-Apo made its debut in the Rustland Grand Prix, appearing as the invincibility mask of any character's Rustland-themed character skin as well as one of the masks for King Chicken and Iron Checkpoint Crate. Like with Sparx, Apo-Apo also acts as every racer's invincibility mask on the track Megamix Mania. Its appearance appears to be based on both Aku Aku and Uka Uka as they appeared in Crash of the Titans and Crash: Mind Over Mutant.
"Normal - Aku Aku protects you (or Uka Uka if your character is a bad guy). You are instantly safe from all attacks and obstacles while zooming at a high speed. Lasts a few seconds. Beware! Even Aku Aku's and Uka Uka's power cannot save you from chasms and deep water! Juiced Up - Aku Aku and Uka Uka stick around to help you even longer."
"Activate this item to get your team's mascot to spin around your kart in a protective shield for a short time. While the mask is active, weapons and hazards can't hurt you, and any karts that you "accidentally" bump into will spin out. You'll also go slightly faster while you're using it. Be careful not to fall off the edge though, or you'll lose your invincibility. Juiced - Your mascot mask will stick around even longer."
