Official description
Adventure Mode
The Adventure Mode from the original game returns with some adjustments. There are now two modes to play; Classic, which recreates the original experience, and Nitro Fueled, which allows the player to adjust the difficulty, customize their kart, and change their character during gameplay. Additionally, the boss characters are now unlocked automatically after beating them, instead of winning a Gem Cup.
Characters
- For more information, see: Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled/Skins.
The game has 44 playable characters in it. All characters present in the original Crash Team Racing are playable in the game. Nitros Oxide is also playable, having only been a boss character in the original game, and was only playable via cheat devices. All unique characters from Crash Nitro Kart, including five of the six boss characters, are also playable. Pasadena O'Possum and Ebenezer Von Clutch from Crash Tag Team Racing are also playable. A chicken, named "King Chicken", is also playable.
Players can equip characters with skins, some of which have exclusive animations for the winner's podium. Skins from Crash Bandicoot: Warped, Crash Tag Team Racing and Crash: Mind Over Mutant are included as well. Currently there are three sets of skins for Crash, Coco and Cortex that are exclusive for download.
The Invincibility Mask item changes depending on the character. Without counting Penta Penguin and King Chicken who can randomly use Aku Aku or Uka Uka, there is currently 15 drivers affiliated with Aku Aku, 14 with Uka Uka, 10 with the Velo Mask and 3 with Sparx.
In Adventure Mode, characters affiliated with Velo Mask receive instructions from Uka Uka and characters affiliated with Sparx receive instructions from Aku Aku. All characters will use Sparx when playing on Spyro Circuit.
New characters can be unlocked in the Grand Prix, such as Spyro the Dragon, Baby T, Doctor Nitrus Brio, Komodo Moe, Koala Kong, Nina Cortex and the Nitro Squad - consisting of Tawna and the Trophy girls from the original game: Ami, Isabella, Liz, and Megumi. All characters unlockable during the Grand Prix will be added to the Pit Stop at later dates.
As of the start of the Spooky Grand Prix, players now have the option of applying any Driving Style to any character they desire. In addition, a new Driving Style, Drift (Speed: 6/7, Accel: 2/7, Turn: 3/7) was added to the game.

An original character has been hinted as a playable racer in the forthcoming Winter Festival Grand Prix.
Although not being announced as being playable characters in the future, the game references Madame Amberly, the Evil Twins, Evil Crash, and Rilla Roo.
Kart Customization
Before any race, you have the choice to pick a random choice of kart and driver. However, in the “Karts” menu you're able to go deep with your selection and cobble together a sleek hovercraft, wobbly jalopy, or rampaging roadster!
Official description[1]
The player is able to customize their kart beyond just selecting what playable character to use. Customizable components include the kart body, kart wheels, and extra stickers that can be applied. Components can be bought using Wumpa Coins which can be earned in the game's Adventure Mode, Arcade Mode or Online Mode.
Bodies & Decals
- For more information, see: Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled/Bodies and Decals.
This offers up a variety of chassis types, which will grow in number as you earn more through the game. For example, pick the “Classic” CTR kart body that you're used to, or ride in the chunky SUV-style “Crikey”, or futuristic “Doom Buggy”.
Official description[1]
Wheels
- For more information, see: Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled/Wheels.
When you're burning rubber, you might want to install a set of wheels that matches your kart's body. Or, you can mix and match; it's entirely up to you! There's a wide variety of wheels to earn; whether you're using the skinny Six-Pipes rims or the super-chunky Trikee tires, you can have a ton of options in your race prepping!
Official description[1]
Paint Jobs
- For more information, see: Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled/Paint Jobs.
If you're wanting to change the color of your kart chassis to a green, or an iridescent purple, or even add a carbon fiber inlay, then you're in luck: Choose from a selection of preset colors and spray your vehicle in a hue to match your mood, from the vivid crimson of Team Cortex Red to the cool turquoise of Nitro Aqua.
Official description[1]
Stickers
- For more information, see: Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled/Stickers.
You need a last bit of personalization to finish off your contraption, and this comes courtesy of a sticker that adorns your vehicle. Choose a number, cool icon, character face, or leave the kart sticker-free.

Special Karts
- For more information, see: Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled/Special Karts.
Special Karts are non-customizable karts with unique models and paint jobs. They are available only through special promotions outside the game.
Power-Ups
Power-Ups work mostly like they so in the original Crash Team Racing, and these same Power-Ups return from that game. They are items received from ? Crates during a match and can be used to attack opponents or aid the user a little. Collecting ten Wumpa Fruit during a match turns the Power-Ups "Juiced Up", making them more powerful.
Power-Up | Description |
---|---|
N. Brio's Beaker |
The Beaker can be laid on the track or thrown ahead by the player as a simple obstacle. Anyone who runs into it will spin out and lose one Wumpa Fruit. The Juiced Up Beaker contains a red liquid instead of a green one, and causes anyone who runs into it to slow down significantly with a black storm cloud appearing above them. Additionally, the Power-Up they currently have will be replaced with a new one, and they can't use it until the storm is over. |
TNT Crate |
The TNT Crate can only be laid behind the player. When someone runs into it, they have three seconds to repeatedly hop around to remove the crate, otherwise it explodes. Like most Crates, they can be destroyed from a distance with weapon Power-Ups. The Juiced Up TNT Crate is in fact a green Nitro Crate, which will explode immediately on impact. |
Bowling Bomb |
The Bowling Bomb can be rolled out in front of or behind the player, and explodes on impact or when it reaches an abyss. Pressing the Power-Up Button again causes the Bowling Bomb to explode prematurely. When Juiced Up, the Bowling Bomb explodes with a much larger blast radius, making it easier to hit multiple opponents at once. Sometimes, players can receive three Bowling Bombs from a single ? Crate. |
Tracking Missile |
The Missile will target the closest opponent in front of the user and send them tumbling on impact. The Missile won't take the stage layout in mind, however, and will crash into a wall if the target is too far away. They also won't travel over abysses. Players can use a Beaker, Bowling Bomb or a TNT Crate to defend against a Missile. When Juiced Up, the Missile travels much faster and have more accurate aiming. Sometimes, players can receive three Missiles from a single ? Crate. |
Turbo |
Using a Turbo will give the player a quick speed burst. This speed burst also allows the player to squash opponents in the way. The Turbo cannot be stacked within a turbo boost chain to reserve a longer turbo boost. When Juiced Up, the Turbo will give a faster turbo boost that lasts a bit longer. |
Power Shield |
This green bubble shield encases the user, protecting them once from any obstacle or opposing Power-Up. It can also be used to run into opponents. The shield is only active for a limited amount of time, before it disappears. Pressing the Power-Up button again causes the Power Shield to be shot forward and send opponents tumbling on impact. When Juiced Up, the Power Shield turns blue, and will last indefinitely until impacting on an obstacle, opponent or Power-Up. |
Invincibility Mask |
The Invincibility Mask temporarily protects the user from any obstacle, as well as giving them a speed boost. It allows the player to hit as many obstacles, Power-Ups and opponents as they can within its duration. Players will get a different Invincibility Mask depending on the character they play as. Aku Aku appears with Crash and his friends, Uka Uka appears with Cortex and his henchmen, the Velo Mask appears with Emperor Velo XXVII and his associates, and Sparx appears with the Spyro the Dragon characters. Additionally, Sparx replaces Aku Aku, Uka Uka and the Velo Mask as everyone's Invincibility Mask on Spyro Circuit. When Juiced Up, the Invincibility Mask lasts for a longer amount of time. |
N. Tropy Clock |
When used, the N. Tropy Clock emanates a large radius that causes everyone to spin out and slow down significantly for a short amount of time. The Clock also prevents affected opponents from using other Power-Ups. The Juiced Up N. Tropy Clock will cause the opposing racers to slow down for a little longer. This Power-Up is only available during races. |
Warp Orb |
The Warp Orb travels around the entire track, targeting the racer in first place, and will be able to hit anyone it encounters on its way. There is no way for the leading racer to avoid the Warp Orb unless it still possesses a Power Shield or Invincibility Mask. Racers not in first place can still evade the Warp Orb if the track is wide enough. When Juiced Up, the Warp Orb will target not only the leading racer, but also every other racer in front of the user. This Power-Up is only available during races. |
Super Engine |
The Super Engine gives the player an immediate lasting speed boost, even after being hit with an obstacle. When Juiced Up, the Super Engine will produce blue fire, and last longer. This Power-Up is generally only available during battles, but as of August 23rd 2019, is also now always available in online races. |
Invisibility |
Invisibility makes the player invisible to opponents. This prevents Missiles from tracking the user down and makes it harder for opponents to aim their other Power-Ups. Invisible users can still be hit with those Power-Ups, however. When Juiced Up, the effect lasts a little longer. This item is only available during battles. |
Race Tracks
The game has 36 tracks in it, consisting of the eighteen tracks from the original Crash Team Racing, the thirteen tracks from Crash Nitro Kart and five original tracks. The PS4 version of the game has one extra exclusive "Retro Track", Retro Stadium. New and original tracks are added to the game with the release of a new Grand Prix.

From Crash Nitro Kart
Online
The Online Feature allows up to 8 players to play single races or battles together over the internet. The only problem is that the online play feature requires a stable peer-to-peer internet connection and a subscription to Playstation Plus, (for PlayStation 4 users) Xbox Live Gold, (Xbox One users) or Nintendo Switch Online (Switch users), which makes it hard for anyone to obtain more Wumpa Coins.
- Matchmaking mode automatically connects the player to a room containing up to 8 total players based on their skill and the strength of their connection. After the track/arena is decided by a vote, the race/battle will begin automatically. If there are fewer than 8 human players, easy-difficulty AI will be added to the game to ensure that there are 8 participants.
- In Private Match, a player can set up the rules as they please. Other players must be invited manually, or they can join by themselves from the in-game "friends" menu if they are friends with the match's host.

Trivia
- All tracks now have their own designated start line, themed around the track itself. This feature was planned for the original Crash Team Racing but scrapped due to technical limitations at the time.
- If the player presses the "use item" button with nothing equipped, a horn sound will play instead.
- All of the Crash Nitro Kart karts (including the Team Cortex kart which had steering handles and the Team Trance kart which steered with a mind-controlled antenna) with unconventional steering devices, as well as Oxide's Hovercraft, have now been given steering wheels for animation consistency.
- In the original Crash Team Racing, the player could accelerate, brake and reverse by holding Up or Down on the Right Analog Stick if they were playing with an analog controller. This feature has been removed in Nitro-Fueled.
- Most of the tracks and other levels reuse assets from the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy such as creatures and enemies.
- The voice actors featured in the N.Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited Trilogy return to portray their characters (with the exception of Nitrus Brio, who is now voiced by Tom Kenny, taking up the role from Maurice LaMarche). The game also features the very first instance of Tawna, Komodo Moe and Koala Kong (though only in the Neon Circus Grand Prix Intro) having spoken dialogue.
- The game and its tie-in comic book feature the biggest amount of references to most of the other games in the series to date, featuring multiple references from the original trilogy, Crash Bash, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, Crash Bandicoot 2: N-Tranced, Crash Nitro Kart, Crash Twinsanity, Crash Tag Team Racing, and Crash: Mind Over Mutant in the form of character returns, skins, karts, cameos and easter eggs, something which developer Beenox noted to be intentional by stating they had all previous games to draw content to add on the game.
