Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy (クラッシュ バンディクー ブッとび3段もり!, Kurasshu Bandikū Buttobi San-Dan Mori!; lit. "Crash Bandicoot Surprise 3-Stage Serving!" in Japan) is a 3D platforming video game published by Activision, developed by Vicarious Visions,[2] who have previously released Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure, Crash Bandicoot 2: N-Tranced, Crash Nitro Kart, and Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage.

It was originally released in the United Kingdom on June 23, 2017, before being released worldwide on June 30 and in Japan on August 3, initially exclusive for the PlayStation 4. Activision later released the game for Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Steam on June 29, 2018 in North America, Europe, and Australia, whilst Sega published the game for the Nintendo Switch in Japan on October 18, 2018.[3]

The game consists as a collection remakes of the original Crash Bandicoot (1996), Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back (1997), and Crash Bandicoot: Warped (1998) with slightly altered gameplay, a remastered soundtrack, re-recorded dialogue with high definition cutscenes, a unified load and save menu and time trials for all three games.[4]

These are included in the base game achievement list on Xbox One.

Differences from the originals

Original Remake
The HUD for all three games are different, with the first game lacking the box counter and the second game missing the total number of boxes on the box counter. The HUD has been unified for all three games, showing the collected and total boxes as shown in Warped.
Time trials can only be challenged to obtain relics in the third game, and the leaderboards only display local records. All three games now possess time trials and relics, as well as online leaderboards.
Bounce Crates require ten bounces to break in the first two games, and five bounces in the third. Bounce Crates require five bounces to break in all three games.
TNT Crates only flash in the first game, and Nitro Crates do not have any effects other than hopping on the ground. TNT Crates flash in all three games, and Nitro Crates have a glowing effect.
Boulders in Crash Bandicoot & Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back would not break certain crates and occasionally hopped They now break all crates and do not hop
Aku Aku can enter the Chase levels in Crash Bandicoot, but is banned from the ones from Cortex Strikes Back with the exception of obtaining him in the secret area in Un-Bearable but will instantly lose him once being chased Aku Aku is now banned from entering all Chase levels with the exception of obtaining him the secret area in Un-Bearable but the player will not lose him.
Cortex is voiced by Brendan O'Brien in the first game, and by Clancy Brown in the second and third games. Cortex is voiced by Lex Lang in all three games, thus his voice is consistent throughout the trilogy.
The Game Over screen in Crash Bandicoot has the words "Game Over" in the same font as the title logo with Cortex chasing Crash from left to right. In Cortex Strikes Back, Cortex appears and says "Game Over" while laughing evilly. Warped features Uka Uka in the same role that Cortex had in Cortex Strikes Back. Crash Bandicoot and Cortex Strikes Back has the Game Over screen with a silhouette of Uka Uka saying "Game Over". In Warped, Uka Uka is covered in shadow in most instances, but will occasionally appear fully visible instead.
The intro cutscene for Crash Bandicoot is limited in its scope due to hardware limitations, with character models simply appearing in looping animated cycles or appearing frozen in place. There are various changes across the intro cutscene, including animals seen in the cages, Crash jumping out of the Cortex Vortex and Tawna fighting back when captured.
Tawna wears a plain hot pink tank top. Tawna's top now has Crash's face on it.
Tawna is completely silent throughout the whole game. Tawna now audibly gasps in the intro, and cheers for Crash at the end of the bonus rounds before being grabbed by Cortex.
Crash Bandicoot contains a password system in addition to a memory card save system, which only has one slot. All three games each have three manual save slots, in addition to one automatic save slot which can be disabled from the main menu.
The middle island was moved around clockwise. The middle island is now mirrored and is navigated around counter-clockwise.
When falling into a pitfall, a whooshing noise is heard. When falling into a pitfall, Crash will say "Woah!" while Coco will say "Oof!" or "Oh!"
In Crash Bandicoot, the player can only save their progress if they get a Gem, a Key, or complete a Tawna bonus round. The latter is the only way to update the level count for the completion percentage. The player can save at any time by pressing the L2 button while on the map.
You can only visit the Tawna, N. Brio and Cortex bonus levels once in Crash Bandicoot, and the last Tawna Token Crate turns into a Checkpoint Crate There is now a bonus platform by the third token of the level which acts as a warp to the bonus level, this can be visited as many times as you like until the bonus level is completed.
In Crash Bandicoot, the bonus levels do not contribute towards the Box Count and are not required for the Gem. The Gem's Box Count now includes all bonus rounds.
In Crash Bandicoot, the player must break all the boxes and finish the level without dying (outside of Bonus Rounds) to get the Gem. Only the Colored Gems require the player to not die as well (outside of Bonus Rounds); the Clear Gems only require the boxes.
In Crash Bandicoot, the results screen will not appear if the player died at any point in the level. The results screen will now appear regardless of any deaths.
In Tawna's bonus levels, she does not move and points toward the save point. Tawna yells "Woo-hoo!" in excitement before being kidnapped by Cortex.
When defeating a boss, Crash flies up into mid-air and shouts "Yee-ha!" in the Crash Bandicoot' and does the Crash Dance in Cortex Strikes Back and Warped. In all three games, Crash spins around and puts two fingers up on both hands, referencing a peace out sign before departing the level.
In Crash Bandicoot, after defeat, a boss would simply pass out. All bosses have unique defeat animations.
Papu Papu has 3 hit points in all versions of Crash Bandicoot, except for the Japanese version where he has 5 hit points. Papu Papu has 5 hit points in every region.
The cavern behind Koala Kong is completely dark. The cavern behind Koala Kong is lighter, with additional crystals seen behind him, as well as another track with a mine cart parked on it.
When defeated, Pinstripe accidentally shoots the power generator behind the glass wall and the majority of Cortex Castle's power is destroyed and kneels down. When defeated, Pinstripe accidentally shoots the power generator behind the glass wall and the lights were shot goes dark. Pinstripe fall backwards and end up getting hit by the hanging light ceiling causing him to pass out.

Brio's potions are green and red.

Brio's potions are green and purple.
Brio has 9 hit points. Brio has 7 hit points when facing his normal form, and 3 hit points when facing his monster form, which adds up to 10 hit points. However the 7th hit point automatically goes down when Brio drinks his potion that turns him into a monster. Brio's name changes to '?!?' and his icon changes to one representing his monster form.
The blobs produced by Brio's green potion are translucent balls that disappear when jumped on, each blob stomped reduces one hit point, though Crash does not visibly hit Brio until he changes. The blobs are more pronounced gelatinous monsters, with eyes and a mouth. When Crash stomps on a blob, it squirts slime at Brio, reducing a hit point.
Brio always throws potions with his left hand (which holds the green potion). When he intends to throw the red potion, the green potion turns red right after leaving his hand. The purple potion is tossed from his right hand.
Brio drinks the red potion to transform. Brio drinks both the purple and green potions together at once to transform.
In the intro cutscene for Cortex Strikes Back, the animations are limited due to hardware constraints. The cutscenes now feature a richer level of detail, thanks to the modern hardware.
Professor Ripper Roo is shocked by Crash's sudden appearance in Cortex Strikes Back, causing him to growl in irritation before grabbing his cane and beginning his attack. Professor Ripper Roo is still shocked by Crash's appearance, but does not get angry, skipping straight to grabbing his cane to attack. Upon being defeated, Ripper Roo's wig falls off.
In Cortex Strikes Back and Warped, entering a bonus round containing Nitro Crates after the Nitro Switch Crate has been activated shows the box counter for the bonus level at 0. The box counter for the bonus level now includes the total of destroyed boxes upon entering.
In Cortex Strikes Back and Warped, the Nitro Switch Crate only detonates the Nitro Crates within the vicinity, just despawning the rest of them. The Nitro Switch Crate causes all of the level's Nitro Crates to explode, and destroys any crates within proximity to the Nitros.
In Cortex Strikes Back and Warped, Crash had a lower resolution, but more expressive and defined model than in the first game. Crash uses the same model in all three remade games which appears to be a much more detailed model combining features from both Naughty Dog trilogy models.
In all three of the original games, Cortex's model is different. However in the third game, his model from Cortex Strikes Back is used during Tiny's boss fight, while his model from the original game is used during his own boss fight. Cortex uses the same model in all three remade games.
Coco wears a blue flower in her hair. Coco wears a pink flower in her hair.
In Cortex Strikes Back and Warped, the enemies poof away into smoke when jumped on. The enemies shrink into nothingness when jumped on.
Crash enters the boss fight when using the platform in the middle of the warp room. The depreciated Load/Save wall in the warp room is replaced with a doorway to the boss fight.
You can replay the boss by holding triangle and pressing up while on the elevator platform. You can replay the boss by re-entering the boss doorway.
In Cortex Strikes Back, there's a hologram cutscene before Ripper Roo's boss fight where Cortex warns Crash about enemies blocking the way to each Warp Room. There is no hologram cutscene. Although recorded, it was cut due to the dialogue referring to using the platform in the middle of the warp room to fight Ripper Roo which is no longer the case. https://youtu.be/3DjI4H1vQzY
In Cortex Strikes Back, Cortex clearly says "Be wary of the pathways between Warp Rooms." Cortex's words have been drowned out by static.
In Cortex Strikes Back, Crash's arm will come out when spinning on dig-able ground. Crash or Coco's legs will come out when spinning on dig-able ground.
During Tiny's battle, the green platforms flash red and sound a warning at a steady rate until the platforms fall. The red flashing and warning sound start at a steady rate, then speed up as the platforms get closer to falling.
After Tiny falls off of his platform once defeated, it drops while the remainder of the dropped platforms raise back up. The dropped platforms, apart from Tiny's, do not return once he is defeated.
In Cortex Strikes Back, Cortex clearly says "Use the platform to deliver the crystals to N. Gin!" The words "Use the platform to" are drowned out by static, due to the new boss doorways.
In Cortex Strikes Back, the Secret Warp Room cannot be accessed via the elevator, forcing Crash to enter through a secret exit and leave via one of the doors. Crash can now use the elevator in the first warp room to descend into the secret warp room, and return to first warp room the same way. This allows him to use the three secret entrances and play the two secret levels without having to travel to a secret exit warp.
In Cortex Strikes Back and Warped, N. Gin is silent while fighting Crash and Coco, respectively. There are also no indications of how much damage the mech parts have taken. N. Gin tends to laugh maniacally as he attacks. Also, his mechs' arms and weapons begin to spark after a couple of hits as an indicator of how much damage those parts took.
N. Gin can be seen standing unobstructed in his mech, and he does not visibly appear to be controlling it, yet its arms move in tandem with his. The mech has levers, which N. Gin is noticeably moving to operate it.  However, the mech's arm movements still copy those of N. Gin, even when he isn't touching the levers.
In Cortex Strikes Back, during N. Gin's boss battle, when Crash is attacking there is no animation of the Wumpa Fruits being thrown. When attacking, Crash is clearly using his arms to throw the Wumpa fruits at N. Gin.
In Cortex Strikes Back, N. Gin will say "Dr. Cortex will be very displeased with your resistance! Prepare to suffer his wrath!" when defeated. N. Gin only shows annoyance with Crash until he's at the last hit point, the acid cannon is visible at that point, and his mech loses the entirety of both of its arms.

N. Gin will scream after being defeated by Crash, shows annoyance with him even when he's on his last hit point, the acid cannon is visible only when activated and then retracted for a later attack, and his mech's arms are reduced to mechanical stubs.

In Cortex Strikes Back, Crash puts on/takes off the goggles and jetpack uncovered. Four metallic tiles cover Crash when he's putting on/taking off the goggles and jetpack.
In Cortex Strikes Back, the player still has control of Crash after defeating Cortex. The camera focuses on Dr. Cortex after Crash defeats him.
In the normal ending to Cortex Strikes Back, Crash just stays sleeping while Coco comments on the Cortex Vortex. A passing crab takes the sleeping Crash away while Coco is oblivious to this.
In the true 100% ending in Cortex Strikes Back, 38 clear gems (one more than it should be) and 5 coloured gems are shown in a column. Crash simply jumps on the button which causes a laser to directly hit the Cortex Vortex and causes it to explode. About 10 clear gems and 6 coloured gems are shown in a column, including the orange gem from Crash Bandicoot, despite it not appearing in Cortex Strikes Back. Crash belly flops on the button which activates the laser which cuts the Cortex Vortex in half, causing it to explode and fall to Earth.
In all three games, Cortex has a different icon. Cortex's icon is unified across the games
In Cortex Strikes Back and Warped, N. Gin has a different icon. N. Gin's icon is unified across the games.
In the intro cutscene to Warped, the animations are once again fairly basic due to hardware limitations. The cutscenes are much more elaborate and feature minor changes in sequences, such as Crash comedically smacking into the locked door at the Bandicoot House before being yanked in by Coco, N. Tropy warps into the time twister rather than walking in from his chamber, and a frog demonstrating how to use the time twister.
In Warped, leaving the first level you play without a crystal will cause a cutscene with Aku Aku calmly scolding you, before telling you to "go back in and find the crystals, before Dr. Cortex enslaves us all." Aku Aku doesn't scold you if you exit a level without the first power crystal.
When attacking Tiny, the crowds will shout "boos" at him. The crowds will not throw anything after defeating Tiny. The crowds will not shout out "boos", when attacking Tiny. Also after defeating Tiny, the crowds will throw tomatos at his unconscious body.
Dingodile shakes soot off his face when he loses a hit point. He is also vocally silent throughout the entire battle until his defeat when he warns Crash that he will soon be up against much worse after falling unconscious. Dingodile doesn't shake soot off his face as there is none to shake off. He also grunts and laughs throughout his boss fight, and screams and curses each time he is attacked.
After N. Tropy's boss fight, Uka Uka will say "By defeating N. Tropy, you have placed us all in grave risk!" Uka Uka will say "By defeating N. Tropy, you have placed us all in great danger!"
N. Gin's first Time Twister message starts when you enter the 19th level. N. Gin's first Time Twister message starts when you enter the 18th level.
N. Gin is already on-screen with his mech on and immediately fights Coco. When entering his boss arena, N. Gin appears on-screen, starting up his mech before battling Coco.
N. Gin says "Prepare to be pulverized, Bandicoot!" at the start of his fight, and when defeated he yells "ARRRGGGGHH! Not again!" N. Gin says nothing before or after his boss fight.
During Cortex's boss fight, his hoverboard would disappear out of nowhere when Cortex fell through the shaft in the middle of the room, and when Cortex is defeated, the shaft closes without Uka Uka travelling through to get to Cortex. Cortex's hoverboard pilots itself into the shaft, with Uka Uka following after, even after the last hit point, and the shaft remains opened.
Every boss (with the exception of Tiny Tiger and Cortex) has a unique speech upon being defeated by Crash or Coco, and the Time Portal instantly takes them back to the Warp Room, unless they have grabbed the Super Power. Only N. Tropy retains his speech from the original game, with all other bosses remaining silent upon their defeat, and they can traverse the area as long as they like before entering the Time Portal.
In the PAL version of the third game, N. Tropy's speech is not heard unless the player returns to the side of the arena on which they started the fight. N. Tropy's speech plays immediately after his defeat in all versions.
Health balloons in flying levels give 50% health back. Health balloons in flying levels give 40% health back.
In the PAL versions of the games, the player can select from five languages on the title screen, including English, Spanish, French, German and Italian. Language selection is now dependent on the language in the console settings.
Coco is playable only in Warped on certain levels which include all the Jet Ski and Great Wall of China levels, as well as Bye Bye Blimps and N. Gin's boss fight. Coco is playable in all three games, in any level except for levels which have Crash's vehicle and boss levels. She is available from the start in the third game, but must be unlocked in the first two games by beating the first boss in each game.
Coco is not present at all in Crash Bandicoot. Coco is present in all three games as an alternate playable character. She can be accessed from her time machine, which is south of Papu Papu in the first game, and next to the Warp Room 2 boss gate in the second game.
In the third game, Coco stands to the left of the Load/Save screen, which has the words "LOAD SAVE" on it. Coco stands at the center of the screen with her laptop. The screen now toggles between shots of N. Sanity Island from Crash Bandicoot and the second warp room from Cortex Strikes Back, which is where she can be found in those games.
Uka Uka has reddish-pink flames atop his bones. Uka Uka has purple-blue flames atop his bones (except in the ending cutscenes, where they are standard-colored flames).

Trivia

  • None of the voice actors who were featured in the original games reprised their roles in N. Sane Trilogy. Instead, the voice actors are mostly role reprisals from Crash Twinsanity and Crash Tag Team Racing, with some actors being completely new to the series. The dialogue script is largely unchanged, with only minor changes to accomodate the character personalities built upon since the original games.
  • This is the first home console and main Crash Bandicoot game to be released after a 9 year hiatus since Crash: Mind Over Mutant.
  • The game is the first game in which Wumpa Fruit can be actually be seen inside bounce crates.
  • In a promotional picture featuring various character models, Koala Kong is relatively bigger compared to other characters, Komodo Joe has been made taller and Komodo Moe has been made shorter.
  • Both Wumpa Fruit and Crash's life icon will glow if the player collects Wumpa Fruit and extra lives.
  • The canon reason for Coco's playable appearance in the first two titles is that she used the Time Twister Machine to go back in time and help Crash in his first two adventures. The story and cutscenes of both games do not change to accomodate Coco, with Crash returning for any previous scripted moments when needed.
  • Unlike the Pura levels in Crash 3, the Time Trial clock does not stop when Crash is dismounted in the Polar levels in Crash 2.
  • Naughty Dog themselves are referenced three times; twice during the opening for the second game and once during the opening for the third game.[15]
    • An asteroid bearing the Naughty Dog paw print has been added during the introduction of Cortex's space station.
    • Coco's computer screen during the opening features a scene from Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, which was developed by Naughty Dog, the scene in the game that referenced Crash Bandicoot in the form a Easter Egg mini-game based on the Boulders level.
    • A picture of Nathan Drake can be seen on the fireplace in the Bandicoot House during the third game's opening.
      • All references to Naughty Dog are removed outside the PlayStation 4 version.
Gem Column'
  • The Orange Gem appears in the second game's secret ending, despite it never appearing in any other Crash game after the original. The model is also incorrect; it's the same as a clear gem, rather than its original model.
  • In Warped, standing in the top left corner of Tiny Tiger's boss fight arena can be used to avoid all lions running. In this game, getting into that spot will make the spectator Lab Assistants throw cheese at you as an easter egg, as it would be "cheesing" the fight.
  • The Relic Trophy names from the third game are references to Crash Team Racing commercials from 1999. Some fans speculated that this hinted at a CTR remake in the near future, but such plans have yet to be confirmed.
  • Unlike the original games on PlayStation, this game received an "E10+" rating by the ESRB while the original games received an "E" ("K-A" for the first two titles, before being renamed in 1998).
    • The game received the "E-10+" rating for "Cartoon Violence" and "Comic Mischief".
    • The summary on the ESRB's website explains this about the assigned rating:
      • This is a platformer game in which players assume the role of Crash Bandicoot as he works to foil a villain's plot. Players traverse platforms and defeat enemies and bosses in order to progress the story. Crash can jump on enemies' heads or use a spin attack to knock enemies out. Some sequences allow players to pilot a plane and shoot at enemy blimps causing them to explode. Boss battles involve more protracted combat. One boss character wears an outfit that reveals a slightly exposed buttocks (e.g., "plumber's crack").
        • The boss character in question is presumably Papu Papu.
    • In Europe, the game was given a 7 age rating by PEGI for "violence". The original games were given a 3 rating by preceding agency ELSPA.
  • Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is the first Crash Bandicoot game to ever be released on PC and Steam.
  • Originally, the release date for Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy on multiple platforms was July 10. But its release was pushed forward to June 29.
  • The UK will have a limited edition version sold at the retailer GAME for £54.99 on the PS4, Xbox One & Switch, Which includes a Cardboard Crash Crate with Crash Bandicoot Merchandise inside.
  • No code or assets from the original games were used for the trilogy. It was built from the ground up.[16]
  • The Nintendo Switch port was not originally intended to be developed until a lone engineer at Vicarious Visions successfully ported the game's first level to the platform, proving it was feasible to port the entire game.[17]
  • Hidden in the game files are unused models that appear to be have been intended for Skylanders: Imaginators. These include Crash Bandicoot as he appears in that game, the Jet Stream from Skylanders: SuperChargers[18], a test character known as Template_Legacy and what appear to be three scrapped Skylanders, known as BlasterTech, BruiserUndead and WranglerFire. While all of these characters have abilities and animations, none of them function properly and cannot jump.[19] Interestingly, the Skylanders Crash Bandicoot can crawl when put back into the game, even though he was incapable of doing so in Skylanders: Imaginators. These files were possibly used during the early development of the N. Sane Trilogy.
